Stephen is a Senior Principal Analyst at Omdia and focuses on the fixed broadband access space from both supply and demand perspectives. His research examines fixed broadband related opportunities for operators and vendors. Stephen has 15 years of experience as an analyst covering the fixed broadband market globally and has produced numerous reports and engaged in large numbers of projects covering the sector. He has a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from St Catherine’s College, Oxford University.
Joanne-Emilie Mbella, B.Eng, EMBA, Director of Fiber Broadband, Axian Telecom
Joanne Mbella is a dynamic and impact-driven telecom executive with over 15 years of experience leading broadband strategy, network transformation, and customer experience innovation across Africa, the Middle East, and North America. She currently serves as Director of Fiber Broadband at Axian Telecom, where she oversees multi-country fiber deployments and spearheads strategic partnerships with industry giants.
With a strong foundation in engineering from École Polytechnique Montréal and an Executive MBA from Bayes Business School of London, Joanne combines technical depth with strategic vision. Her leadership has been instrumental in accelerating fiber adoption, driving double-digit revenue growth, and elevating customer satisfaction across diverse markets.
Joanne brings a unique perspective on the opportunities and challenges in scaling fiber networks across Africa, drawing from her extensive work with operators, OTT partners, and government stakeholders. Passionate about connectivity as a catalyst for digital inclusion and economic development, she is a sought-after voice in the industry and a champion for innovation and inclusive growth.
Juanita Clark, Chief Executive, Digital Council
Digital Council Africa is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that acts as a bridge and connector between the government, the technology industry, and stakeholders across Africa to develop the digital sector and economy. The Digital Council embraces the extraordinary possibilities that the digital economy has for Africa and our aim and mission is to remove the boundaries of technological inclusion. Our objectives include helping all stakeholders to work together to deliver on the expectations of a gigabit society.
Juanita co-founded the organisation in 2010 after realising the need for grassroots awareness and education with regards to the role of fibre optic networks in the telecommunications industry. She brought with her more than 20 years of technology industry experience and expertise.
Pa Touray, Quality Assurance Directorate Monitoring & Evaluation, Gambia Telecom
Pa Touray is the Head of Monitoring and Evaluation at the Gambia Telecommunication Company Limited and the Telecommunications Cellular Company (GAMTEL/GAMCEL), the Gambia’s primary provider of core telecommunication services. In this capacity, he focuses on developing strategies to assess the processes, viability, effectiveness, impact, and sustainability of projects to enhancing Quality of Service and the delivery thereof to aid in decision making. Pa has been in the telecommunications industry for two decades. He previously held the positions of Regional Core Engineer, Manager Transmission, and Manager Enterprise Risk Management (GAMTEL/GAMCEL). His background is Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Telecommunication systems and Digital Networks and Information Technology.
Dr. Sunil Piyarlall, Executive: Network Architecture and Modelling, Openserve
Sunil Piyarlall is the Executive for Network Architecture and Modelling at Openserve. With over thirty years of experience in the Information and Communications Technology fraternity, Sunil has held key Business and Technology Strategy positions within the Telkom Group.
He serves on various industry bodies, including the World Broadband Association. Sunil brings his extensive FTTH knowledge, as well as experience from presenting at several local and international conferences, to address industry challenges and advance technology evolution.
Mr. John Omo, Secretary-General, African Telecommunications Union (ATU)
Mr. John OMO is the Secretary-General of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU), the African Union’s specialized agency for telecommunications and ICTs’ development in Africa. He has held the position since January 2019 and was re-elected for a second 4-year term at the ATU Conference of Plenipotentiaries held in Algiers, Algeria in July 2022. He leads the continental body entrusted with building consensus within African countries in the development of ICT policies, systems and services, and also in coordinating African participation in international ICT fora.
Mr. Omo has 33 years of experience as a lawyer and has contributed immensely to the development of local and international policies, legislation, agreements, and treaties in all areas of public service life but mainly in the area of ICTs.
